San Mateo Police Arrest Suspect for Brandishing

Man swiftly arrested after pointing a realistic looking pistol at multiple people – weapon purchased minutes before at Big 5 Sporting Goods.
On Thursday, November 8, 2018, at around 2 p.m., San Mateo Police Dispatch received several 911 calls regarding a man with a gun in the area of 31st Avenue and S El Camino Real. Witnesses told dispatchers they saw the man point the gun at multiple bystanders and described him as wearing a white t-shirt and blue pajama bottoms.

As police officers converged in the area, multiple community members pointed at the suspect as he walked with the gun in his left hand. Observing the gun in his hand, officers acted swiftly by arresting the man as he attempted to walk toward a main entrance of the Hillsdale Shopping Center. During his arrest, officers determined the man was intoxicated.

Officers inspected the gun and learned at that time it was a black BB gun that strongly resembled a semi-automatic handgun (see image). San Mateo Police are investigating the sale by Big 5 Sporting Goods to an intoxicated male minutes before he brandished this replica gun at multiple people.

The suspect was transported to San Mateo County Jail and booked for several charges.
