Crime Alert Bulletin

When I mention “the unit block” of a street, this means the incident occurred at an address anywhere between 1 and 99 of the street.

Notable Cases

On Tuesday, 10-30-18 at 3:35 a.m., a 41-year old San Francisco resident was arrested for driving under the influence after she collided with two parked cars on the 400 block of 88th Street.

On Wednesday, 10-31-18 at 7:00 a.m., a 41-year old Pittsburg resident was the victim of battery with serious bodily injury after he got into a fight with his co-worker, a 24-year old Concord resident. The two were working for a painting company, and the fight occurred at Skyline Plaza. The victim was punched and kicked in the face. Later our crime suppression unit arrested the suspect.

On Thursday, 11-01-18 at approximately 3:18 a.m., Officer Bermudez was patrolling the area of Marbly Avenue and Surrey Court, an area which there have been several recent reports of a prowler with a flashlight who was seeing walking between houses and parked cars. The prowler’s image was captured on several neighbor’s cameras. Officer Bermudez saw a subject that closely resembled the prowler who was driving in the area. The officer conducted a traffic stop, approached the driver and engaged him in a conversation. After obtaining the subject’s identification, the officer learned the subject, a 28-year old Daly City resident, had a suspended driver's license and was on court probation. After the officer conducted a search of the suspect’s vehicle, the officer placed the subject under arrest for possession of marijuana for sales, possession of a controlled substance, possession of ketamine and for driving with a suspended driver's license.

On Thursday, 11-01-18 at approximately 5:25 p.m., a 38-year old Daly City resident was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol following a vehicle collision at Highway 35 and Westridge Avenue.

On Saturday, 11-03-18 at 9:00 p.m., Officer Hightower and Sgt. Moala were dispatched to the 600 block of Lake Merced Boulevard on a report of an unconscious driver. The reporting party said the subject was parked in the middle of the roadway. Officer Hightower contacted the driver who was blocking oncoming traffic and was unconscious. The subject, a 55-year old South San Francisco resident, was subsequently arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol.

On Sunday, 11-04-18 at 2:42 a.m., Officer Covarrubias was dispatched to the Seton Hospital Emergency room on a report of a patient who was refusing to leave. The reporting party said the suspect had been discharged but was ignoring requests to leave the hospital. Officer Cain arrived to assist, and the officers found the subject sleeping. The officers escorted the subject, along with his multiple backpacks and bags, out of the hospital and offered to give him a ride to the BART station. The subject consented to a search, and Officer Covarrubias found a plastic bottle containing a reddish liquid. The subject told the officer it was Methadone. The 51-year old transient subject did not have a prescription for the methadone, and the officer cited him for possession of a controlled substance without a valid prescription.

On Sunday, 11-04-18 at 9:45 a.m., Officer Gill was dispatched to the Valero Gas station on Junipero Serra Boulevard on a report of a subject who was panhandling and who had activated the emergency shut off system to the gas pumps when he was denied money. The 34-year old transient subject was booked for trespassing.

On Sunday, 11-04-18 at 6:24 p.m., a loss prevention officer for Nordstrom Rack was the victim of an assault after she attempted to stop two subjects for stealing items. The loss prevention officer said she saw two suspects remove security tags from merchandise and place them into a backpack. The loss prevention officer said one of the subjects pointed a hand-held “taser” at her and activated it and then exited the store when she called 911. While making the call, the loss prevention officer said the male suspect returned and tried to hit her in the face but missed. The same subject took the phone out of the victim’s hands and threw it on the ground. The subjects were last seen getting into a U-Haul truck. The victim described the female suspect as being Hispanic, approximately 25-years old, heavy set, black hair, blonde highlights and wearing all black. The male suspect was described as Hispanic, 25- years old, slim build, buzz-cut hair and wearing a gray hoodie. This investigation is continuing.

Public Safety Dispatch Centers in San Mateo County Now Able to Receive Text to 911 Emergency Calls for Service: “Call if you Can—Text if you Can’t”

Effective immediately, all San Mateo County Law Enforcement and Fire Agencies’ 911 Dispatch Centers are equipped to receive and respond to mobile phone SMS Text to 911 messages. All phones or devices must include a text or data plan, be text capable, and have their location services enabled to send a text message to 911.

Callers who cannot communicate verbally are now able to use the text to 911 service to request help directly from local public safety agencies. This technology directly benefits members of our deaf, hard of hearing and speech-impaired communities as they will now have a more efficient and effective way to request emergency services in times of need. Additionally, those who find themselves in a situation where it may be too dangerous to dial 911 will have another option to call for help during an emergency.

For the deaf, hard of hearing and speech-impaired communities, texting to 911 is always an acceptable way to contact 911 for help. Others should only use the text to 911 feature when speaking to a 911 Dispatcher is not possible or may place an individual at risk. Examples include a domestic abuse situation, an active shooter incident, or an incident that has caused injury resulting in an inability to speak. Otherwise, it is always best to dial 911 and speak with a dispatcher directly.

Here are some helpful tips when using the Text to 911 service:

• Always provide the exact location of the emergency
• Text messages should be brief and easy to understand
• Do not use abbreviations, emojis or slang
• Remember that the ability to send/receive images and videos is limited and often dependent on
the cellular provider
• Texts can only be received in English at this time - this service will be available in additional
languages in the near future
• Do not include others when texting to 9-1-1 (no group texting)

***REMEMBER*** Please only call 911 in the event of an emergency and only text to 911 when calling is absolutely not an option. For more information on text to 911 visit the San Mateo County Commmunications Manager’s Association website at www.CMASMC.com

San Mateo County Alert System (SMC)

This alert is a free digital communication system used by emergency management agencies and first responders to send emergency alerts, notifications and updates to portable digital devices. Nextdoor.com

Nextdoor.com is a free private social networking website for your neighborhood. This private network ensures that only those who live in your neighborhood can join; users must go through a verification process. Neighbors ask each other for business recommendations; help in locating missing pets; discuss relevant local government issues; or connect for other reasons. It is very easy to sign up, and I like the fact that the site verifies users by addresses, and it won’t allow people to access to a neighborhood if they don’t actually live there. Please note: The City of Daly City and/or the Police Department cannot see what residents post—we are only allowed to post information. There is also a mobile application, or you can have it sent to your e-mail. Give it a try! www.nextdoor.com
