SMPD Arrest Retail Theft Suspects Causing Temporary Road Closure of Hillsdale Blvd.

San Mateo Police Officers arrest four San Francisco residents in connection with grand theft at Hillsdale Shopping Center.

On Monday, November 5, 2018, around 8 p.m., San Mateo Police received a report of an in-progress theft involving four masked suspects, one possibly armed with a firearm, at the Hillsdale Shopping Center. The witness reported the suspects stole a large quantity of merchandise from Victoria's Secret and fled in a gray Nissan Rogue with paper plates.

San Mateo Police Officers quickly saturated the area and located the Nissan leaving the shopping center. Officers conducted a traffic stop of the Nissan at the intersection of E. Hillsdale Boulevard and Curtiss Street. For the safety of the community, pedestrian and vehicle traffic on E. Hillsdale Boulevard was temporarily closed in both directions as officers investigated the allegation of a firearm being possessed by one of the involved suspects. All occupants of the Nissan were identified as the theft suspects and were arrested. The stolen merchandise, totaling approximately eight thousand dollars was located inside the Nissan, which was later returned to Victoria's Secret.  Officers did not locate a firearm, but after further investigation a hammer with a black handle was located that could have been mistaken as a gunstock of a firearm. All four suspects were booked into county jail for various charges.

The San Mateo Police Department is actively working this investigation. We are communicating with other law enforcement agencies to determine if these suspects are responsible for additional crimes.
