SUMMARY:
On November 4, 2018, Sheriff’s dispatch began receiving calls from concerned citizens in Yucaipa regarding a suspicious vehicle occupied by two persons in neighborhoods believed to be committing thefts. Calls originated first in the City, then in the surrounding county area. At approximately 2:20 pm, a propane tank was reported stolen from a residence on King Street in Mentone. A witness described the suspects and the vehicle. The vehicle matched the description of related calls in the City of Yucaipa; the vehicle was confirmed to be a black 1997 Infiniti Q45. An extensive area check was conducted with the assistance of the Sheriff's helicopter. Unfortunately, the vehicle was not immediately located. Vehicle information was provided to deputies at the Highland Police Department and Officers from the Redlands Police Department.

During the investigation, Deputy Paul Franklin observed the suspect vehicle in the area of Kilkare Road off of Highway 38. Deputy Franklin attempted to conduct a traffic stop on the vehicle, the driver failed to yield, and a pursuit was initiated. The suspects fled westbound on Highway 38 at a high rate of speed. The suspects tried to make the turn south onto Bryant Street and hit a vehicle stopped in the intersection before losing control and skidding off the roadway into a ditch, disabling their vehicle. Both suspects ran from the vehicle and deputies quickly setup a perimeter. The occupants of the second vehicle were not injured.

The Sheriff's helicopter and deputies searched the wash area where witnesses reported seeing the suspects as they fled from the crash. Deputies observed the suspects through binoculars hiding under some bushes in a ravine to the east of Crafton Hills. Additional personnel was guided into the area, and both subjects were detained without further incident. The suspects were identified and found to be juveniles.

As the investigation continued at the traffic collision, deputies located multiple items of property believed to have been stolen in addition to the propane tank.

The suspects were taken to a local area hospital for an evaluation and later booked into Juvenile Hall in San Bernardino. Victims have come forward to claim their stolen items. However, deputies believe there are additional victims. The investigation is ongoing and anyone who may have been victimized, or has information related to this investigation, is encouraged to contact the Yucaipa Sheriff's Station.
