Traffic stop leads to arrest of Evansville woman on Marijuana charge.

On November 5, 2018, at 8:41 a.m. Sgt. Bruce Vanoven conducted a traffic stop on a Blue 2005 Pontiac Grand Prix for having False and Fictitious plates on the vehicle while traveling on US 41 near County Road 1250 South. Upon approaching the vehicle Sgt. Vanoven identified the driver as 34 year old Melissa L. Smith of Evansville. During a roadside investigation Sgt. Vanoven discovered a small amount of Marijuana as well as drug paraphernalia inside the vehicle. At the conclusion of his investigation Sgt. Vanoven transported Ms. Smith to the Gibson County Jail where she was charged with Possession of Marijuana and Possession of Paraphernalia. Ms. Smith was also issued citations for Expired License Plates, Operating an Unsafe Vehicle, and Driving While Suspended-Infraction. She remains in custody on a $550 bond.

Assisting Sgt. Vanoven in his investigation was Indiana State Trooper Ryan Johnson.

All Criminal defendants are to be presumed innocent until, and unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
