Moraga Police have recently witnessed and issued a number of citations for unsafe driving. As a reminder, here are a few safe driving tips:

** School Buses. Drivers in BOTH directions are required to stop for a school bus displaying flashing red lights. These lights are only activated when loading or unloading students. It is not safe to pass the bus when this is occurring as children may unexpectedly run across the road. The only exception is if the road is divided by a solid median. In this case, if you are on the opposite side of the road and there is a solid median dividing the roadway, then you can continue to drive safely, but watch for kids!

** School Zones. The speed limit in school zones, when children are present, is 25 MPH. However, due to conditions, the safe speed may be lower than 25. Think about the front of Joaquin Moraga School as the kids are arriving or departing from school and the area is very congested. In this case, the safe speed could be as low as 10-15 MPH.

** Crosswalks. Drivers are required to stop and yield the right-of-way to pedestrians crossing the roadway in marked or unmarked crosswalks. However, pedestrians are also required to use due care for their safety. For example, pedestrians cannot suddenly leave the curb and run out in front of an oncoming vehicle in such a way that the driver cannot stop.

Please call the Moraga Police at 925-888-7055 with any questions or concerns.

We all share the responsibility for traffic safety -- which is especially important when it concerns our children. Please join with the Moraga Police and drive safely while watching out for kids on and around our roadways.

Thank you!
