The officer also noticed a young child sitting in the back seat. The officer asked the driver to step out of the vehicle to determine the subject’s level of sobriety, and the subject agreed. After Officer Ciucci conducted field sobriety tests, he determined the driver was indeed under the influence and placed him under arrest. The subject, a 39-year old Daly City resident, was also charged with child endangerment, as his six-year-old son was in the backseat. There were two residential burglaries and one attempted residential burglary during the past week.

On Thursday, 10-25-18 at 1:05 p.m., officers were dispatched to a residential burglary in progress on the 100 block of Bellevue Avenue. The 33-year old reporting party was asleep and heard the doorbell ring approximately 15 to 20 times. The reporting party then heard what sounded like a tampering sound from his front door and went downstairs to investigate. The reporting party said he saw figures near his front door and then saw three subjects run down the stairs into an awaiting vehicle, only described as a black Volkswagen. The suspects gained entry by forcing the front gate to the residence, and the subjects attempted to pry open the front door. Officers checked the area for the vehicle, but they were unsuccessful.

Public Safety Dispatch Centers in San Mateo County Now Able to Receive Text to 911 Emergency Calls for Service: “Call if you Can—Text if you Can’t”

Effective immediately, all San Mateo County Law Enforcement and Fire Agencies’ 911 Dispatch Centers are equipped to receive and respond to mobile phone SMS Text to 911 messages. All phones or devices must include a text or data plan, be text capable, and have their location services enabled to send a text message to 911.

Callers who cannot communicate verbally are now able to use the text to 911 service to request help directly from local public safety agencies. This technology directly benefits members of our deaf, hard of hearing and speech-impaired communities as they will now have a more efficient and effective way to request emergency services in times of need. Additionally, those who find themselves in a situation where it may be too dangerous to dial 911 will have another option to call for help during an emergency.

For the deaf, hard of hearing and speech-impaired communities, texting to 911 is always an acceptable way to contact 911 for help. Others should only use the text to 911 feature when speaking to a 911 Dispatcher is not possible or may place an individual at risk. Examples include a domestic abuse situation, an active shooter incident, or an incident that has caused injury resulting in an inability to speak. Otherwise, it is always best to dial 911 and speak with a dispatcher directly.

Here are some helpful tips when using the Text to 911 service:

• Always provide the exact location of the emergency
• Text messages should be brief and easy to understand
• Do not use abbreviations, emojis or slang
• Remember that the ability to send/receive images and videos is limited and often dependent on
the cellular provider
• Texts can only be received in English at this time - this service will be available in additional
languages in the near future
• Do not include others when texting to 9-1-1 (no group texting)

***REMEMBER*** Please only call 911 in the event of an emergency and only text to 911 when calling is absolutely not an option. For more information on text to 911 visit the San Mateo County Commmunications Manager’s Association website at www.CMASMC.com

This alert is a free digital communication system used by emergency management agencies and first responders to send emergency alerts, notifications and updates to portable digital devices. Nextdoor.com

Nextdoor.com is a free private social networking website for your neighborhood. This private network ensures that only those who live in your neighborhood can join; users must go through a verification process. Neighbors ask each other for business recommendations; help in locating missing pets; discuss relevant local government issues; or connect for other reasons. It is very easy to sign up, and I like the fact that the site verifies users by addresses, and it won’t allow people to access to a neighborhood if they don’t actually live there. Please note: The City of Daly City and/or the Police Department cannot see what residents post—we are only allowed to post information. There is also a mobile application, or you can have it sent to your e-mail. Give it a try! www.nextdoor.com
