Boat Collision in San Mateo Lagoon Leaves One Injured and Driver Arrested

On Sunday, October 28, 2018, just before 4pm, San Mateo Police Officers responded to the San Mateo Lagoon behind the 600 block of Fathom Drive to investigate a reported boat collision. Officers determined that two individuals were kayaking in the lagoon in two separate kayaks, when one of the kayakers, a 15-year-old male from San Mateo, was struck by a motorized boat. The teen suffered serious injuries and was quickly transported to the nearest trauma center. The driver of the motorized boat was on scene and cooperated with the investigation. The boat driver, 48-year-old Stephan Chiari of San Mateo, was found to be under the influence of alcohol and arrested at the scene for violations of 655(a) Harbor & Navigation Code – Reckless Operation of a Boat, 655(b) Operate a Boat while Intoxicated, and 655(f) Harbor & Navigation Code – BUI with Injury. Though alcohol was determined to be a factor, the full dynamics of the collision remain under investigation at this time.

As of today, October 29, the 15-year-old remains at a local trauma center in critical condition.
