Nor'easter Storm October 26 & 27

The Carlstadt Office of Emergency Management is warning residents to use caution with the coming storm.  A Nor’easter is expected to hit our area late Friday, October 26, 20188 and continue through the evening of Saturday, October 27, 2018.  A large amount of rain is expected along with high winds.  Winds are forecasted to be 20 – 30 m.p.h. with gusts of up to 50 m.p.h. 
 
The National Weather Service has issued the following warnings and watches for our area:
 

  • High Wind Advisory - WIND ADVISORY REMAINS IN EFFECT FROM 1 AM TO NOON EDT SATURDAY... * WINDS...East 20 to 30 mph with gusts up to 50 mph. * TIMING...Late tonight through Saturday morning. * IMPACTS...Strong winds may blow down limbs, trees, and power lines. Scattered power outages are expected. PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS... A Wind Advisory is issued when sustained winds of 31 to 39 mph, or gusts of 46 to 57 mph, are expected or occurring. Winds this strong can make driving difficult, especially for high profile vehicles, in open areas, and on elevated roads and bridges. Use extra caution 
     
     
With this in mind the Office of Emergency Management would like to offer the following items to prepare for the storm:
 
  • If you don’t have to go out, don’t.  At the height of the storm conditions will be difficult at best.
  • If you do go out, do not drive through any puddles that you are not sure how deep they are. While it may appear safe to drive through, the puddle may be deeper than you thought and could stall your car.
  • Secure any loose items In your yard due to the high winds.
  • In the event of downed wires, do not go near them or touch them.  Contact the police department.
  • In the event of a power failure, remain calm.  Use battery powered lights.  If you must use candles, keep them away from flammable items.  In the event that you need electricity for LIFE SUSTAINING equipment, please contact the Director of Emergency Management @ 201-362-1942 or the Carlstadt Police.
  •  In the event of a prolonged power outage, or evacuation due to flooding, shelters will be available to those who need them.
