National Drug Take-Back Initiative

On October 27 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. the Bethlehem Twp Police Dept and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) will give the public its 16th opportunity in eight years to prevent pill abuse and theft by ridding their homes of potentially dangerous expired, unused, and unwanted prescription drugs.

Bring your pills for disposal to the below locations. (The DEA can accept tablets, capsules, patches, ointments, creams and liquids , but CANNOT accept needles or sharps). The service is free and anonymous, no questions asked.

We'll be staffing four locations-
Giant Food Store - 3926 Nazareth Pike
Young's Pharmacy - 3708 Freemansburg Avenue
CVS Pharmacy - 4950 Freemansburg Avenue
St. Luke's Anderson Specialty Pavilion - 2200 St. Luke's Blvd

This past April, Americans turned in 450 tons (over 900,000 pounds) of prescription drugs at more than 5000 sites operated by the DEA.

This initiative addresses a vital public safety and public health issue. Medicines that languish in home cabinets are highly susceptible to diversion, misuse, and abuse. Rates of prescription drug abuse in the U.S. are alarmingly high, as are the number of accidental poisonings and overdoses due to these drugs. Studies show that a majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends, including from the home medicine cabinet. In addition, Americans are now advised that their usual methods for disposing of unused medicines—flushing them down the toilet or throwing them in the trash—both pose potential safety and health hazards.
