Attempted Murder/Aggravated Battery

On Thursday October 18th at approximately 9:41 p.m. a Millstadt Police Officer responded to a 9-1-1 call at Reinhardt’s Restaurant, located at 201 West Madison Street, for a fight in progress. The responding Officer was further advised there was a subject injured, and Millstadt EMS had been dispatched. Upon the Officer’s arrival he found the suspect inside the business and took him into custody. The Officer found an elderly male victim outside the business with multiple injuries. Millstadt EMS transported the victim to a local hospital. A St. Clair County Sheriff’s Deputy arrived on scene for assistance, and evidence was collected at the scene. Throughout the following day, members of the Millstadt Police Department conducted multiple interviews, collected additional evidence, and continued their investigation.

On Saturday the 20th, the report was forwarded to the St. Clair County State’s Attorney’s Office for consideration of charges. Later that day the suspect, Wesley H. Reinhardt, age 45 of Millstadt, was charged with six felonies. The following is a synopsis of the charging documents filed by St. Clair County State’s Attorney Brendan Kelly’s Office:

Count 1: Attempt Murder – in that the defendant, with the intent to commit the offense of Murder, performed a substantial step toward the commission of that offense, in that he, with the intent to commit the offense of First Degree Murder, performed a substantial step toward the commission of that offense, in that he, with the intent to kill the victim, struck the victim in the head with a shovel. A Class X Criminal felony, Category A Offense.

Count 2: Aggravated Battery/Great Bodily Harm/60+ - in that the said defendant in committing battery, knowingly caused great bodily harm to a person over the age of 60 years, in that he struck the victim in his head with a shovel. A Class 2 Criminal Felony, Category A Offense.

Count 3: Aggravated Battery/Deadly Weapon – in that the said defendant, in committing a battery, and by the use of a deadly weapon, a shovel, knowingly caused bodily harm to the victim, in that he struck him in his head with a shovel. A Class 3 Criminal Felony, Category A Offense.

Count 4: Aggravated Battery/Victim 60+ -in that the said defendant, in committing a battery, knowingly made physical contact of an insulting or provoking nature with a person over the age of 60 years, in that he wrapped his arm around the victim’s neck and applied pressure. A Class 3 Criminal Felony, Category A Offense.

Count 5: Aggravated Battery/Victim 60+ - in that the said defendant, in committing a battery, knowingly made physical contact of an insulting or provoking nature with a person over 60 years, in that he repeatedly struck the victim about his body. A Class 3 Criminal Felony, Category A Offense.

Count 6: Aggravated Battery/Public Place – in that the said defendant, while at Reinhardt’s Restaurant, a public place of amusement, knowingly made physical contact of an insulting or provoking nature with the victim, in that he repeatedly struck the victim about his body. A Class 3 Criminal Felony, Category A Offense.

The bond was set at $750,000, and Reinhardt remains in custody at the St. Clair County Jail.

At this time, we are unable to disclose the relationship between the defendant and the victim, other than to say this was not a domestic situation. Since the incident, the victim has been released from the hospital. The investigation in this case is ongoing.
