SMPD Arrest Felon in Possession of a Firearm Following a Report of a Possible Residential Break-in

This evening, around 7:20 p.m., San Mateo Police Officers responded to the 1600 block of York Avenue on a report of a possible vandalism or residential break-in. The caller told our dispatchers they heard the noise of glass breaking and noticed the front window of a neighbor’s house was broken. Officers quickly arrived at the location, established a perimeter, and saw a man walking in and out of the house with a firearm. Neighbors in the immediate area were asked to briefly shelter in place as our officers investigated the suspicious circumstances.

After establishing communications with the homeowner and further investigation, officers were able to determine that man with the firearm inside the home was Stephen Moon. Officers knew Moon from prior investigations and that he had an active no bail warrant for his arrest. Crisis Intervention Trained (CIT) Officers began negotiations with Moon to exit the residence without the firearm. After about ten minutes of negotiations, Moon exited and he was safely taken into custody. It was later determined Moon had permission to be inside the residence. Moon was consequently booked into county jail for the warrant and for being a felon in possession of a firearm.
