Traffic Stop Leads to Firearm Arrest

A Simi Valley Police Department Motrocycle Officer made a traffic stop on a vehicle for violating the no left/u-turn sign at Cochran Street and Clover Street.

The officer conducted a records check which revealed that the driver, Guillermo Raymond Mercado Jr. (21 years-old), a Littlerock, CA resident, had a suspended license for a prior DUI and was required to have an Ignition Interlock Device installed on his car. When the officer re-approached the driver, he saw the butt end of a handgun protruding from Mercado's front pants pocket.

With the assistance of other officers, the motrocycle officer was able to remove Mercado from the car and take him into custody without further incident. Mercado was booked for 25400(a)(2) PC [Concealed Firearm in a vehicle], 14601.2(a) VC [License Suspended for DUI], and 23247 VC [driving without an IID installed]. He was booked at the Ventura County Sheriff's Department East Valley Detention Center.
