Felony OWI 4th Offense
On Wednesday, October 10, 2018 at 1:03 AM, an officer with the Middleton Police Department began attempting to make contact with a driver in the 1000 block of North Gammon Road after learning from DOT records that the vehicle owner had a revoked driver’s license. Before the officer could take enforcement action, however, the suspect quickly parked his vehicle and walked away from the area on foot. He was not immediately located.
Approximately an hour and a half later, at 2:43 AM, the same officer observed the suspect return to the scene, this time operating a different vehicle. The officer initiated contact and identified the driver as Derrick D. Sykes, 36, of Madison. The officer noted an odor of intoxicants coming from Sykes’ person and he admitted to consuming alcoholic beverages.
After completing field sobriety testing, Sykes was arrested for 4th offense Operating a Motor Vehicle While Intoxicated (OWI), a felony. Sykes later provided an evidentiary chemical test of his breath, which was found to be 0.13.
Sykes was transported to the Dane County Jail where he was booked on the tentative charge of 4th offense OWI. He was also ticketed for operating after the revocation of his driver’s license and failure to have an interlock ignition device installed.
