PRESS RELEASE - Nearly 600 Firearms Surrendered at Gun Buyback Event

Sunnyvale, CA - On Saturday, Sept.29, the Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Office and the cities and police departments of Sunnyvale, Los Altos, Mountain View, Palo Alto, and Santa Clara held the first ever North County Gun Buyback event. The event was hosted by the Sunnyvale Presbyterian Church at 728 W. Fremont Ave. in Sunnyvale.

The overall goal of the gun buyback event was to reduce the availability of unwanted, unsafe and illegal firearms in communities by providing a safe and anonymous opportunity to dispose of them.

The event was a great success – 567 firearms in total were surrendered, 400 of them within the first two hours of the event. The firearms included: 264 handguns, 182 rifles, 98 shotguns and 23 assault weapons. The firearms will be destroyed, except for those that are lost or stolen, which will be returned to the owner.

In a joint statement, District Attorney Jeff Rosen, Sunnyvale Public Safety Chief Phan S. Ngo, Los Altos Chief Andy Galea, Mountain View Chief Max Bosel, Palo Alto Chief Robert Jonsen and Santa Clara Chief Mike Sellers stated, “We are grateful for the support and participation by our communities. Just one firearm removed from the streets is a step in the right direction in reducing the number of guns in homes that can be stolen and used by criminals. A total of 567 firearms removed is a major success.”
