INCIDENT: Hoist Rescue
LOCATION: 49 Palms Oasis Trail, Joshua Tree
VICTIMS: Philip Marmon, 20 years of age
SUMMARY:
On September 30th, 2018, at approximately 10:00 p.m., San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Aviation responded to a report of a hiker suffering a heat emergency in the 49 Palms Oasis Trail area in Joshua Tree. The hiker, later identified as Philip Marmon, went on a hike with several friends and began experiencing heat-related symptoms. He was eventually unable to continue hiking and was in and out of consciousness. Joshua Tree National Park Service Search and Rescue teams were deployed and located Marmon. Due to Marmon’s location in a rocky canyon and his declining medical condition, assisting San Bernardino County Fire personnel requested the assistance of San Bernardino County Sheriff’s helicopter 40-King for a hoist rescue.
Sheriff’s personnel assigned to the aviation unit responded to the scene to perform a hoist rescue.
A rescuer was lowered approximately 25 feet from the helicopter to large boulders in the canyon. The rescuer assessed Marmon for injuries and secured him into a rescue harness. Marmon was hoisted up and transported to a nearby awaiting medical helicopter for transport to a hospital for treatment.
