Police Respond to a Family Dispute

On Friday, September 28, 2018, at approximately 5:10 p.m., Simi Valley Police Officers responded to a Family Dispute in Progress in the 2200 block of Sycamore Drive. When the officers arrived on scene, they contacted the reporting party in front of the residence. The reporting party said her 13-year-old son was having a mental health episode and armed himself with a butcher knife and chased her out of their residence. While the officers were on scene, they could see the juvenile subject walking back and forth through the front windows of the residence. As the incident progressed, some of the officers observed the barrel of a firearm pointed in their general direction through a window. The officers later heard the sound of a gunshot come from inside the residence. The juvenile continued to walk around the residence and opened up the front door and threw out a beverage can which contained an unknown substance inside it that was on fire. The juvenile also opened a side door to the residence and lit some foliage on fire. The officers continued to negotiate with the juvenile and eventually convinced him to exit the residence unarmed at 6:48 p.m. The juvenile was detained for a mental health evaluation as per Section 5585 of the Welfare and Institutions Code.

After the juvenile was detained the officers conducted a thorough investigation regarding the incident. They determined that the juvenile’s father was not storing his firearms in a safe manner. The juvenile’s stepfather, 50-year-old Paul Bartlett was arrested for 12035(b)(2) PC-Criminal Storage of Firearms. The officers seized 18 firearms from inside of the residence and booked them into evidence.
