Occurred Date : September 18, 2018
Occurred Time: 1:17 AM
Location: 900 block Lakeville Street
Suspect(s): Jason Remel, 37 year old transient
On September 18, 2018, around 1:17 AM, a Petaluma police officer attempted to stop a bicyclist for failing to stop at a red light, riding against traffic, and not having required lights during darkness. The bicyclist refused to stop despite the officer’s emergency lighting and siren, as well as verbal orders. Other officers arrived, and the bicyclist wove in and out of the patrol vehicles as he refused to stop for approximately ¾ mile.
Officers eventually boxed the bicyclist in enough to slow him, and he was pulled off his bicycle. Officers arrested Jason Remel for evading. He was also suspected of riding his bicycle under the influence of alcohol. A record check revealed he had an extensive criminal history. During a search of his belongings, methamphetamine was located, and he was also charged with possession of controlled substance. He was booked into the Sonoma County Jail.
Petaluma Police Department reminds bicyclists that they are subject to the same rules of the road as motorists, including operating a bicycle under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
