Traffic Delays Expected Friday Evening. Highway Remains Closed

A crash on Route 130 at Route 522 has forced the closure of the highway in both directions. Officials believe the closure may last into Saturday. The closure caused extensive delays in and around the Dayton and Monmouth Junction areas of the Township during the morning rush hours. South Brunswick Office of Emergency Management has declared a traffic emergency for the roadways impacted in and around the crash site. A dozen officers have been working to set up detours and assist schools and businesses in the area. County, State, and utility companies are working to address the developing issues as a result of the highway closure.

The crash took place at 9:53pm Thursday night. A 27 year old male driver lost control of the 2017 GMC pickup he was driving and crashed into the utility pole splitting it in half. The pole had several power lines which landed across the highway blocking all travel. The pickup truck also struck a light station. The driver was taken by Monmouth Junction First Aid Squad and paramedics to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries. Preliminary information indicates the driver suffered a medical condition resulting in the crash.

The local traffic emergency means that police anticipate that Friday’s evening rush hour will have significant delays with multiple roads and intersections being gridlocked. Police are advising motorists to expect extensive delays on the following roads;

  • Route 130
  • Route 522 (Dayton)
  • Ridge Road (Dayton)
  • Georges Road
  • Route 535
  • Route 32
  • NJ Turnpike Exit 8A
  • Deans Rhode Hall Road
  • Fresh Ponds Road

Drivers should use Route 1 or the New Jersey Turnpike as an alternate route.
