On September 6, 2018, at approximately 11:00 AM, officers responded to the area of the Lynch Creek Trail and N. McDowell Blvd. for a report of two subjects with weapons. One male subject was reported as throwing a knife into the ground while another male subject was reportedly seen carrying a makeshift spear.
Officers responded to the area and began checking the Lynch Creek Trail on foot. While checking the area the observed two subjects one of whom matched the description of the subject who had reportedly been armed with the spear in the area of the Lynch Creek Trail and the US 101 undercrossing.
As officers approached those subjects the one matching the description of the subject with the spear immediately got up and began to flee from the officers. As the subject fled he appeared to discard an unknown item along the trail causing the pursuing officer to believe he was attempting to discard evidence or contraband. That subject, later identified as Ronald Stamp, ran westbound on Lynch Creek Trail towards Payran Street. Despite repeated orders Stamp continued to flee and at one point jumped into the Petaluma River and attempted to swim across it towards Jess Ave.
Additional officers responded to that area and quickly apprehended Stamp without incident. Stamp denied discarding any contraband as he fled. Stamp also denied possessing any weapons and stated he had not be in possession of a spear but rather a tent pole. Officers checked the area where he had been observed and located no contraband.
A records check of Stamp revealed that he had an outstanding felony warrant for a prior weapons violation. Stamp was placed under arrest for the outstanding warrant and additionally charged with 148(a)(1) PC, resisting/obstructing a peace officer. Stamp was transported to Sonoma County Jail and booked into custody for the above violations.
Officers continue to actively patrol the Lynch Creek Trail and Petaluma River areas and encourage community members to report suspicious activity.
