SUMMARY:
On September 3rd, 2018, at 2:09 p.m., San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Aviation and Fire personnel responded to a report of an injured female hiker near the base of Big Falls in the Forest Falls area. The injured female, later identified as Tejal Pipariya, reportedly fell 20 feet while climbing up the falls and sustained moderate injuries. Pipariya was hiking the area with family members, who witnessed the fall and immediately called 911 to report the incident.
Fire personnel responded to the incident and requested aviation assets to assist. Due to the remote location and extent of injury, it was determined Pipariya would need to be hoist rescued. Sheriff’s rescue helicopter Air Rescue 6, staffed with Sheriff and Fire personnel, responded to the location and rigged up for a hoist rescue.
A rescue medic was lowered 140 feet down to Pipariya from the helicopter to assist with rescue operations. Pipariya was secured into a rescue basket and was hoisted up into the helicopter, followed by the rescue medic. Pipariya sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was flown to a local trauma center for further medical treatment.
