For many people, Labor Day signals the unofficial end of summer. The extended holiday weekend is often marked by barbeques, beach trips, and family outings.  Whatever your plans may be, Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station reminds you to have fun safely. Don’t make the reckless decision to drink and drive. 
 
Throughout the holiday weekend, Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station deputies will be proactively patrolling our community for public safety, with an increased emphasis on watching for impaired motorists. 
 
Most individuals are well aware of the dangers of drinking and driving. The increased risk of hurting or killing yourself and others in a traffic collision attributed to drunk driving should be more than enough to deter everyone from driving under the influence.
 
Still, just to make the case against drinking and driving even stronger, take a moment to think about the staggering cost financially you will incur if you are convicted of a DUI
 
Being convicted of DUI is not cheap. A single DUI charge encompasses many different types of expenses including, but not limited to:

•  Legal fees
•  Court penalties
•  Administrative costs
•  The cost of an impounded vehicle
•  Victim Restitution Fund
•  Car Insurance increases
•  DUI driver’s education classes
•  DMV fees for reinstating license
•  Loss of work wages

 A first time DUI with no injuries or deaths involved can easily cost over $10,000 dollars.
 
“If you are going to consume alcohol, plan ahead,” said Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Traffic Office Sergeant Scott Shoemaker. “Use alternative transportation to get home such as a designated driver, taxi, or ride-sharing service. There are so many options available that there really is no excuse for getting behind the wheel of a car after drinking.”

Tips to celebrate Labor Day weekly safely and responsibly:

• If you plan on consuming, don’t wait until after you start drinking to figure out how you will get home—plan your sober ride home ahead of time.
•  Whether it is a sober friend, ride-sharing service, or taxi, make sure you know your options and set a backup plan in case your plans change.
• Can’t find a safe way home? Check with friends or family to see if you can stay the night.
• If you are hosting a party/gathering, pay attention to your guests. Some hosts gather keys when guests first arrive so that they can ensure that when they leave, they are not exhibiting any signs of being under the influence.
• If you should see a possibly impaired driver on the roads, please call 9-1-1 and provide dispatchers a description of the vehicle and the location and direction of travel.

When you've been drinking, you may think you're probably okay to drive, but alcohol can affect your judgment. If you have to ask, "Am I okay to drive?" -  then you already have your answer. Buzzed driving is drunk driving.
