INCIDENT: Officer Involved Shooting

LOCATION: 31000 Block of Florida Street, City of Redlands

SUSPECT(S): Tyler Hodge, 18-years-old, Resident of Redlands


SUMMARY: On Tuesday, August 28, 2018, at about 8:30 p.m., officers from the Redlands Police Department were dispatched to a report of a suicidal man with a gun in the 31000 block of Florida Street. When officers arrived, they located Tyler Hodge, and he was armed with a firearm. Officers tried talking with Hodge to get him to drop his weapon. 

Officers used non-lethal force trying to disarm Hodge. The non-lethal force was ineffective, and Hodge walked away from the officers toward Outer Highway 10, near Live Oak Canyon. Officers walked with Hodge, maintaining communication, while he was still armed with the firearm. Officers tried negotiating with Hodge, but Hodge pointed and discharged the firearm at them. The officers feared for their safety, and an officer-involved shooting occurred when they fired back at Hodge. Hodge was transported to the hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

Redlands Police Department requested the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department Specialized Investigations Division-Homicide Detail to handle the investigation. The sheriff’s department is conducting interviews and follow up investigations. Any witnesses to the incident are urged to contact Detective K. McCurdy at (909) 387-3589.
