Crime Alert Bulletin

When I mention “the unit block” of a street, this means the incident occurred at an address anywhere between 1 and 99 of the street.

Notable Cases

On Monday, 08-13-18 at 10:30 a.m., a 39-year old Daly City resident was the victim of fraud via a telephone scam from someone pretending to be from the Internal Revenue Services who threatened to arrest her if she did not pay her “past due” taxes. The victim was instructed to purchase $1,600 worth of “Google Play” cards and provided the unknown suspect with the card numbers. The caller told the victim, “I know where you work. Don’t report this to the police or say anything or something will happen to you or your husband.” When the victim’s husband got home from work, he convinced her to contact the police. By now, everyone should be aware that the I.R.S. does not call and threaten arrest, much less ask to be paid with “Google Play” or any other type of card. Please pass this information along to the small population who has not heard of this scam!

On Tuesday, 08-14-18 at 11:00 p.m., Officer Graner conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle for an illegal U-turn at Cliffside Drive and John Daly Boulevard. The 55-year old female driver from San Francisco was cited for possession of methamphetamine and possession of drug paraphernalia. The 58-year old female passenger, also from San Francisco, was cited for possession of a controlled substance and for possession of drug paraphernalia.

On Wednesday, 08-15-18 at approximately 11:11 p.m., Officer Lechleitner was dispatched to the Serramonte Shopping Center parking lot near Target on the report of a strong arm robbery. The victim, a 49-year old Uber driver, said he was driving a few people in an “Uberpool” when one of his passengers sitting in the front passenger seat became upset that he had to drop off another passenger before her first. The victim said the suspect grabbed the steering wheel while he was driving on the freeway and pulled off the freeway into the Serramonte Shopping Center parking lot in front of Target. The victim said while in the parking lot, the suspect punched him with a closed fist on the neck, grabbed his iPhone from the magnetic cell phone car mount and opened the front passenger door. The victim said he stopped the vehicle so the suspect would not fall out of his moving vehicle. The victim said the suspect then started running across the parking lot with his cell phone in her hand. The suspect said he exited his vehicle and began to chase the suspect, yelling at her to give him back his phone. The victim said the suspect eventually outran him and left the scene with his phone, leaving her behind her purse and wallet in his vehicle. This investigation is continuing.

On Thursday, 08-16-18 at 1:26 a.m., Officer Ortiz contacted a subject at the intersection of South Mayfair Avenue and Fairlawn Drive. The subject, a 20-year old San Francisco resident, had two outstanding warrants from San Francisco for narcotics violations, theft and assault. He was also in possession of stolen property from Walgreens and CVS in San Francisco. The subject admitted to the officer that he was going to sell the items at a flea market. Officer Ortiz placed him under arrest for the warrants and for possession of stolen property.

On Thursday, 08-16-18 at 1:45 a.m., following a pedestrian stop on the 6500 block of Mission Street, Officer Graner arrested a 45-year old San Francisco resident for being a felon in possession of pepper spray/tear gas.

On Thursday, 08-16-18 at 5:44 p.m., Officer Jackson-Berrios was dispatched to the Serramonte Shopping Center near Nordstrom Rack on a report of two subjects looking into vehicles. Officer Jackson-Berrios contacted one of the subjects, and the other subject fled, but he was ultimately contacted by Officer Perdomo near the McDonald’s. Officer Jackson-Berrios told Officer Perdomo she believed the property belonging to the victims were in a Nissan which was parked nearby. The officer found keys for a Nissan when she initially searched the subject and placed the keys on the trunk and later realized they were missing. Two female subjects approached Officer Perdomo to inquire about the detention of one of the subjects, and one of the females had the keys to the Nissan in her hand. Officer Jackson-Berrios asked for the keys, and the subject gave them to her, and the officers found the stolen property in the Nissan. The two male subjects, 26 and 27-year old Sacramento residents, were arrested for vehicle burglary, conspiracy to commit a crime and for possession of stolen property. The female, a 31-year old Sacramento resident, was arrested for concealing evidence during the course of an investigation. All of the subjects have an extensive arrest history.

On Sunday, 08-19-18 at 12:32 a.m., Officer Covarrubias and Officer Collins were dispatched to an apartment on the unit block of Coronado Avenue on a report of a male screaming and children being present in the household. As the officers approached the apartment, they could hear a male yelling from within the residence. The officers knocked on the door, and a male subject answered the door, allowing the officers to enter the apartment. The male who answered the door said he took his girlfriend to the beach and tried to notify her parents that he would be bringing her home later than expected but was unable to get reception at the beach. When he brought his girlfriend back to her apartment, he said her stepfather was outside the residence waiting for them. The male, a 20-year old San Mateo resident, said the stepfather began yelling at him and as they walked into the apartment, his girlfriend’s mother began slapping his 20-year old girlfriend. The male said the stepfather then grabbed an aluminum baseball bat and put the bat over his shoulder, threatening to swing at him and verbally threatened to beat him. The girlfriend did not have any injuries and did not want to press charges against her parents. The 49-year old stepfather was arrested for assault with a deadly weapon and for criminal threats and was taken to jail.

Robberies

There were three robberies during the past week.

On Wednesday, 08-15-18 at approximately 11:11 p.m., a 49-year old Uber driver was the victim of a robbery of his cell phone by a passenger. This occurred at the Target parking lot at Serramonte Shopping Center. See “Notable Reports” for more information.

On Thursday, 08-16-18 at 8:20 p.m., a Victoria’s Secret store employee was the victim of a robbery after confronting two subjects for stealing a large amount of bras in bags. The 30-year old employee said he identified himself as a loss prevention agent, and then a female immediately ran while the male subject pushed the employee in the chest. The employee said the suspect swung his fist at him, but he was able to step back to avoid contact. The employee said the subject then reached into the front pocket of his sweatshirt to simulate that he had a weapon hidden. The employee said the suspects then ran out of the store and into a vehicle. This investigation is continuing.

On Sunday, 08-19-18 at 2:37 p.m., officers were dispatched to the area of Skyline Drive and Belcrest Drive on a report of an unknown injury collision and an in-progress physical fight. One of the vehicles fled the scene, and officers were able to locate it on the freeway. After an investigation of what had occurred, officers determined that two males were the victims of a robbery of a substantial amount of currency by two suspects who used pepper spray to commit the robbery. One of the victims, a 32-year old Flushing, NY resident, was also the victim of an assault with a deadly weapon via dragging by the two suspects, a 36-year old male Pleasant Hill resident and a 27-year old female from Sherman Oaks. Following a search of the “victim’s” vehicle, officers found a substantial amount of cash and marijuana. The “victims” were then arrested for the transportation of marijuana for sales, possession of marijuana for sales and maintaining a residence to sell a controlled substance. The two suspects were arrested for robbery, assault with a deadly weapon and conspiracy.

Scams/Other

Home Rental Scam

Late last month, we took a report from a couple who reported that they were victims of a home rental scam. The reporting party said he began an e-mail correspondence that he found on “Padmapper”, an online app that rents apartments and houses. The reporting party said he previously lived in Southern California and had used this app to locate rental properties. He admitted that he knew the app might be risky and could be linked to scams. The reporting party said he was then referred to “Perfect Rental”, another online rental agency. The reporting party said he began an email correspondence of approximately a dozen contacts that ultimately led him to “KSD Group Incorporated”. He said he was told to deposit $5,000 in an account with Bank of America and was provided with an account number in order to rent a property on the unit block of Wilshire Avenue. Part of the email correspondence included a name. The reporting party said he deposited the $5,000 and then was advised to go to the property where he would meet with the name mentioned in order to obtain keys for the residence. The reporting party said he went to the residence and met with a subject; however, the subject was the actual owner of the residence and had no idea what the subject was talking about regarding renting the property. The reporting party said he went back to the Bank of America, and they explained that the account was a branch in Idaho and had already closed.

Nextdoor.com

Nextdoor.com is a free private social networking website for your neighborhood. This private network ensures that only those who live in your neighborhood can join; users must go through a verification process. Neighbors ask each other for business recommendations; help in locating missing pets; discuss relevant local government issues; or connect for other reasons. It is very easy to sign up, and I like the fact that the site verifies users by addresses, and it won’t allow people to access to a neighborhood if they don’t actually live there. Please note: the City of Daly City and/or the Police Department cannot see what residents post—we are only allowed to post information. There is also a mobile application, or you can have it sent to your e-mail. Give it a try! www.nextdoor.com
