Financial Crime Investigators Arrest Couple In Check Kiting Scam.

Harris County Sheriff’s Office Financial Crime investigators have arrested and charged a man and woman for a lengthy and complex check kiting scam that netted the pair over $600,000 dollars.

Investigators say that Jason Mott, 38, and Tabbetha McGuire, 39, began a prolonged Check kiting scheme in March of 2017.

Check kiting occurs when checks are written to transfer cash between two bank accountants before the insufficient check is detected.

Checks are misused as an unauthorized credit.

Mott had started a car performance business that specialized in vintage restoration and car repairs.

He then began ordering parts and motors from major auto suppliers such as Oreilley’s and Advance Auto Parts.

Mott would obtain credit from these businesses, and then would pay them in person with counterfeit checks or in sufficient checks.

Mott and Mcguire would print counterfeit checks which were eventually returned. Mott would then close and reopen in another location.

Customers would bring cars for repair and restoration work, and Mott would never do repairs or auto work on their vehicles. The loss to business and customers totaled over $300,000.

Mott recently rented 6 forklifts from contracting companies earlier this month, and had them delivered to warehouse location in north west Harris County.

The equipment owners would go by to check on their forklifts, but would never be able to enter the property.

When the rentals reached overdue status it was discovered that Mott had vacated the property along with the forklifts. The total cost for the stolen forklifts was over $300,000.

The pair was arrested at their residence at Walden on Lake Conroe without incident.

Jason Mott is under a no bond, and Tabbetha McGuire has a $250,000 bond are currently in the Harris County Sheriff's Office awaiting arraignment.
