In-Custody Death Investigation - We are actively investigating an in-custody death that occurred Tuesday evening.

Incident: In-Custody Death Investigation
Location:  2000 Stevenson Blvd., Fremont, CA
Date/Time of Incident:  Tuesday, August 21, 2018 at 6:10 p.m.

On Tuesday, August 21, 2018, Fremont Police General Crimes Detectives were actively investigating a series of theft and fraud cases.  During their investigation detectives arrested a 42-year-old adult male at Fry’s Electronics (43800 Osgood Rd.) for theft and fraud charges.  The male was taken into custody and transported back to the police department in a fully marked patrol car.

At 6:10 p.m. officers arrived at the police department.  Officers brought the male into the building and placed the suspect in a secured interview room located in our Investigations Unit.  Once in the room, detectives took off the handcuffs and the male sat down.  Detectives briefly left the male in the room to turn on the room’s recording system in the room next door.  When officers turned on the system, they immediately noticed the suspect was having problems breathing.  Several officers responded and began providing medical attention, including CPR.  Fremont Fire was called and responded. Fremont Fire took over CPR until Paramedics Plus arrived and transported the subject to a local hospital.  At approximately 7:45 p.m., the male suspect was pronounced deceased by hospital staff.

While at the hospital, one of the attending doctors provided officers with a sandwich sized plastic baggy.  The baggy contained a second baggy with unknown objects inside of it.  Doctors explained the baggy had been trapped in the male’s trachea and retrieved from his throat.  The baggy containing the object was provided to the Alameda County Coroner for analysis and booking.

Fremont Crimes Against Persons Detectives and the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office are investigating the incident as an in-custody death.  The Alameda County Coroner took custody of the deceased and will investigate the cause of death.  The name of the suspect is being withheld until next of kin are notified.
