Newark Public Safety Director Anthony F. Ambrose reports the arrest of Maurice Edwards, 61, of New York City, in connection with four commercial burglaries in the downtown district.

A church and three businesses were burglarized, namely: Old First Presbyterian Church, located at 820 Broad Street; Beauty Supplies Store, at 183 Market Street; Crown Royal Chicken and Biscuit, located at 181 Market Street; and Rainbow Shop, at 756 Broad Street.

At approximately 2:20 a.m. on Saturday, August 11th, 2018, police responded to the church on a burglary alarm. The suspect fled after stealing food and drinks. Detectives of the 3rd Precinct identified Maurice Edwards as a suspect.

On Sunday, August 12th, 2018, police responded to the beauty supply store, where the owner reported that a burglary had occurred at approximately 2:30 a.m. and that $400.00 was stolen. Detectives of the 3rd Precinct also identified Edwards as a suspect in this incident.

On the same day, police responded to the chicken restaurant, where the owner reported that a suspect had broken in and had stolen approximately $400.00 from the business. Edwards was identified by detectives as a suspect in this burglary.

In the overnight hours of Thursday, August 16th and Friday, August 17th, 2018, the Rainbow Shop clothing store was broken into. Detectives investigating this incident identified Edwards as a suspect also in this incident.

Edwards was arrested yesterday in the 700-block of Broad Street and is charged with four counts each of Burglary, Theft and Criminal Mischief. He was also wanted on two outstanding warrants.

These charges are merely accusations. The suspect is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
