2018-2019 ACADEMIC SCHOOL YEAR TO BEGIN
2018-2019 ACADEMIC SCHOOL YEAR TO BEGIN
On Thursday, August 23, 2018, schools within the Newark Unified School District will resume for the 2018-2019 academic year. This includes all elementary, Jr. High and High schools within the City of Newark.
Students, parents, and staff will be making their way to the various schools on foot, by bicycle, or by car which will increase the amount of traffic on our sidewalks and roadways.
The Newark Police Department will have extra officers on patrol and working in the area of our public schools around town to welcome students and parents. If you are a student, parent or morning commuter, please plan on giving yourself some extra time in the morning for your travels throughout the city. Please take extra precaution around our crosswalks and school zones for children walking or riding bicycles.
Newark PD anticipates most of our roadways in front of the schools will be congested during the morning hours between 7:30-9:00AM and again in the afternoon hours between 2:00-3:30PM. It is recommended that you choose alternate routes to avoid these areas. Typical high traffic roadways to avoid during these time frames are the following:
Cedar Blvd between Chapman Drive and Edgewater Drive
Cedar Blvd between Birch Street and Joaquin Murietta Ave
Cherry Street between Central Ave and Mowry Ave
Lafayette Ave between Newark Blvd and Cherry Street
Central Ave between Cedar Blvd and Cherry Street
Back to school is an exciting time for many, especially those that are starting for the first time or for those that are promoting to the next level of instruction. Newark PD’s priority is to make sure that everyone arrives safely and that motorists are recognizing and obeying traffic laws. Officers will be conducting additional traffic enforcement as needed.
