DETAILS:  Ptl. Zicha initiated a stop on a white 2007 Dodge minivan for erratic driving which included sudden braking, weaving within its lane, failing to maintain its lane of travel and  almost hitting the car next to it on two occasions, and for failing to keep right.
Ptl. Zicha approached the stopped minivan to make contact with the driver, later determined to be Darwin Rojas. While Ptl. Zicha stood next to the passenger side front window, Rojas immediately sped away with his tires screeching, almost rolling over Ptl. Zicha’s feet. Rojas turned onto Washington Rd. (going east toward the Princeton Junction Train Station) and traveled at a high rate of speed as Ptl. Zicha struggled to close the distance between them. Ptl. Zicha temporarily lost sight of the vehicle, but shortly thereafter, found that it had crashed straight into a guard rail and the concrete “Jersey” barrier behind it, at the Princeton Junction Train Station where Washington Rd. comes to a dead end.

Rojas had to be extricated from the minivan which was later determined to have been stolen. Rojas was transported to Capital Health Systems, Fuld Trauma Center with serious injuries. At the hospital, a plastic sandwich bag containing approximately 16 grams of marijuana was found in Rojas’ underwear by medical staff. Found inside the minivan was a clear bag containing approximately 186 grams of marijuana, an open package of Cigarillo cigars, two open containers of liquor, and several electronic devices. Two of the devices, an Apple MacBook and an Apple iPad were later determined to have been stolen proceeds from vehicle burglaries. Rojas was charged with the above listed offenses. Rojas remains at the hospital in stable condition.
