Public schools return to session tomorrow in San Leandro

Tomorrow, August 15th, schools within the San Leandro Unified School District will resume for the 2018-2019 academic year. Corvallis Elementary, Dayton Elementary and Washington Manor Middle schools, which are within the San Lorenzo Unified School system, will return next Wednesday August 22nd

Students, parents, and staff will be making their way to the various schools on foot, by bike or by car which will increase the amount of traffic on our sidewalks and roadways.

The San Leandro Police Department will have extra officers on patrol and assigned to all of the public schools around town to welcome students and parents. If you are a student, parent or morning commuter, please plan on giving yourself some extra time in the morning for your travels. Please take extra precaution in our crosswalks for children walking or riding bikes.

SLPD anticipates most of the roadways in front of the schools will be congested during the morning and after school hours. It is recommended that you choose another route if you can avoid these areas.

"Back to school is an exciting time for many, especially those that are starting for the first time," said San Leandro Police Lieutenant Isaac Benabou. "Officers will be assigned to each school as the priority for us is making sure everyone arrives safely and that motorists are aware of the increase in vehicle traffic. This will also be an excellent opportunity for our officers to engage with parents, students, and staff."

If you have any traffic questions or concerns, please call the San Leandro Police Department at 510-577-3208.

Safe travels and happy first day of school!
