*2nd UPDATE* #LASD Dep Involved Shooting, Suspect Struck By Gunfire, East Los Angeles

Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Homicide investigators are continuing their investigation into the Deputy-Involved shooting that occurred on Sunday, August 12, 2018 in East Los Angeles.
 
The suspect in the shooting has been identified as, a 21 year-old Hispanic male, Anthony Vargas of East Los Angeles.
 
Investigators have learned that during the physical altercation between the suspect and the two responding deputies, the suspect retrieved a firearm from his waistband, fearing for their safety both deputies fired their duty weapons at the suspect.    
 
The investigation into his involvement in the robbery by gunpoint call, prior to the shooting, is still on-going.
 
A loaded semi-automatic handgun was recovered from the scene.
 
There is no further information available.

Whenever a deputy-involved shooting occurs involving Los Angeles County Sheriff's deputies, and a person is struck by gunfire, multiple independent investigations immediately begin at the scene.  These include separate investigations by the Sheriff's Homicide Bureau and Internal Affairs Bureau.  The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department immediately notifies the Office of the Inspector General who sends a representative to the incident scene and provides independent oversight throughout the investigative process.  Once concluded, a preliminary review is conducted by the Critical Incident Review Panel to determine whether any immediate actions are warranted.  Every aspect of the shooting is reviewed by the Sheriff's Executive Force Review Committee.  Input from Constitutional Policing Advisors is provided during the process.  The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office, Justice System Integrity Division, conducts a legal analysis to determine whether any criminal charges will be filed and if the shooting was legally justified.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Homicide investigators are continuing their investigation into the circumstances surrounding a Deputy-Involved shooting that occurred on Sunday, August 12, 2018, in a housing complex on the corner of North Mednik Avenue and Floral Drive in East Los Angeles.
 
Investigators have learned that at approximately 2:00 a.m., East Los Angeles Station deputies responded to the area regarding a call of a male victim being robbed at gunpoint.  Upon arriving, the victim directed deputies to a group of individuals inside the housing complex.  As the deputies drove to contact the group, they fled on foot in different directions.  Deputies directed additional units to the complex in an attempt to locate the suspects.
 
An assisting unit arrived and as they drove through the complex they encountered a Hispanic male adult walking in a courtyard.  The male looked at the deputies and began to run.  The male fell down and as the deputies attempted to detain him, a fight ensued between the deputies and the male.
 
A deputy involved shooting occurred.  The suspect was struck.  The suspect was subsequently pronounced dead at the scene.
 
A semi-automatic handgun was recovered from the scene.
 
One deputy sustained minor injuries and received medical treatment.
 
This investigation is on-going and there is no further information available. 
 
The suspect has not been identified.  It is unknown at this time, if the suspect was involved in the earlier robbery.

NARRATIVE:
Los Angeles County Sheriff's Homicide detectives are responding to investigate a deputy involved shooting. The incident occurred on Sunday, August 12, 2018 at approximately 2:06 AM, in the 500 Block of Colonia De Las Magnolias, East Los Angeles.

The suspect was struck by gunfire.  His condition is unknown at this time.  

No deputies were injured.
