Due to a recent rash of vehicle burglaries, some of which occurred in South Brunswick Township neighborhoods, the South Brunswick Police Department would like to offer the following tips for securing your vehicle and belongings.
Most vehicle burglaries are crimes of opportunity and can be easily deterred by a few easy steps. A large majority of the vehicle burglaries occur in residential neighborhoods during the overnight hours where burglars can go from driveway to driveway to check for unlocked doors or valuables left in plain sight. It’s easy to be complacent and leave your vehicle unlocked, but it only takes one time for a thief to have the opportunity to steal your belongings. These crimes are preventable, and there are some easy steps you can take to keep yourself from becoming a victim of vehicle burglary and theft.
Lock, Hide, and Take
Lock, Take, and Hide is an easy 3-step plan that drastically reduces your chances of becoming a victim:
- Lock your car doors. Sounds easy and it is! This simple step will drastically reduce your chances of having your car burglarized.
- Hide those valuables so they aren’t in plain sight.
- Or at least Take your valuables with you. (This includes cell phones, wallets/purses, GPS units, computers, and jewelry).
Here are some other helpful tips:
- Use your garage.
- Park in a well-lit area.
- Completely close car windows.
- Engrave expensive accessories .
- Install surveillance cameras near your driveway or front door.
- Let your neighbors or the South Brunswick Police Department know if you’re going away.
