The North Brunswick Police Department with a message on National Purple Heart Day-
Today being "National Purple Heart Day", The North Brunswick Police Department would like to take a moment to thank each and every recipient of this award. Our Nation would not be what we are without the power AND sacrifice of our military. It has been said that there is a very fine line between that of a Purple Heart recipient and someone that is celebrated on Memorial Day...
Purple Heart Day on August 7 commemorates the day in 1782 when General George Washington created the Purple Heart Medal – a military decoration that is awarded to those wounded or killed while serving in the United States Armed Forces. At current estimates about 1.8 million Purple Hearts have been awarded since then.
Today, in addition to being awarded to those who fight wars overseas, the Purple Heart is also given to military personnel who display bravery and valor as prisoners of war and while fighting certain types of domestic terrorists.
Thank you to all that have made this level of sacrifice. We salute you.
