Since the beginning of June, the Green Bay Police Department has taken 28 bike theft complaints, responded to 42 abandoned bikes, and have investigated several burglaries where bikes have been stolen. Stolen bikes continue to be a big problem. Officers and CSI’s spend countless hours investigating these thefts and trying to return the bikes to their rightful owners. Sadly, these crimes continue to occur as evident by the number of bikes recovered annually which are eventually auctioned off.

Officers and investigators believe bike thefts are a “crime of opportunity” and bike thieves often commit other crimes such as theft from autos, after the original thefts occur. The Green Bay Police Department has teamed up with CH Robinson, a local business to combat this problem by hosting a “Bike Lock Give Away.” CH Robinson purchased over 70 bike locks for officers and their staff to give away to kids in our community.

The giveaway will be in the pavilion in Fisk Park (995 Dousman St) at 12:30 PM. Staff from CH Robinson and Community Police Officers will be handing out bike locks to children with the hope that this will prevent more bicycles from being stolen. In addition, the department’s crime prevention staff will be registering bikes for free to ensure bikes can be returned to the owner if they are lost or stolen.

“As a department, we have embraced the concept of community policing,” said Police Chief Andrew Smith. “Our west side community policing officers found a creative way of solving the bike thefts in the city, while enlisting the help of CH Robinson. This defines what community policing is and it is making the city a safer and better place for our children,” said Smith.
