Harris County Jail Inmate Dies of Apparent Suicide

July 25, 2018 – A Harris County Jail inmate died on Wednesday of an apparent suicide.
Eldon Lee Jackson, 61, was found unconscious in his cell at 1:18 a.m. with a piece of cloth tied around his neck and affixed to a table.

He was taken from the 1200 Baker Street jail facility to Ben Taub Hospital by ambulance, and was pronounced deceased by doctors.

The Texas Rangers were notified of the death and are investigating.

The official cause of death is pending completion of an autopsy by the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences.

The Texas Commission on Jail Standards has also been notified of the death in custody.

The commission requires that jail staff make visual contact with each inmate every 30 minutes.

Records show that a Harris County detention officer checked on Jackson less than 20 minutes before he was found unconscious.

Jackson was booked into the Harris County Jail on April 15 on Houston Police Department felony charges of burglary, arson, violation of a protective order, and assault of a family member.

He had been assigned to a private cell because of a court order that banned Jackson from having access to a telephone.
