SCV Sheriff's deputies, bystanders save life of distraught man

Two Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s deputies — along with bystanders, and fire department personnel, saved the life of a distraught man who was attempting to jump off of a bridge located on Whites Canyon Road, at Via Princessa in Canyon Country on Monday night.

Around 7 p.m. deputies responded to the location regarding an attempt suicide call. Deputy Jacob Royston was the first on scene. When he arrived, the man was standing on the outside of the bridge’s safety railing overlooking the train tracks. The man was attempting to fall from the railing, and reportedly saying, “Goodbye everyone,” and “My life doesn’t mean anything.”

Deputy Royston, joined by Deputy Jorge Garcia, grabbed onto the suicidal man as he struggled to release their grip. A few times, deputies said ‘he almost slipped away.’ Bystanders jumped in to assist deputies with securing the man to prevent him from falling.

Shortly after, Los Angeles County Fire Department personnel responded to the scene, and to the area below the bridge. The Metrolink Bureau was contacted to temporarily halt train travel through the area while the rescue was ongoing. About 7:50 p.m., fire department personnel placed a harness on the man and pulled him back over the rail safety. He was transported to the hospital for treatment.
