News Release - Palm Springs Police Department

On 07/06/2018 at about 8:08 pm, PSPD dispatch received a call from a lost hiker who stated he started hiking up Dry Falls Trail which is west of the Palm Springs Art museum. The hiker lost sight of the trail and fell down a ravine and could not get out. The hiker stated he was not injured but was not prepared with enough water. The Palm Springs Police Search and Rescue unit was activated and a rescue was under way. Unfortunately due to the terrain and other weather factors, the hiker could not be rescued at the time of the call. The hiker had a working cell phone and was able to communicate with Search and Rescue throughout the night. Additional resources were called in to assist. Los Angeles County Sheriff's Office was contacted and they advised they would provide a Super Puma helicopter to assist with the rescue.

On 07/07/2018 about 8:15 am, the LASO helicopter arrived and was successfully able to rescue the downed hiker from the ravine along with several Search and Rescue officers who had rappelled down to him. The hiker was in good health except for some dehydration and was airlifted to the landing zone. The hiker was evaluated and released from the scene. Thanks to all agencies involved in this rescue.
