News Release:Police Manager Named to National Board Responsible for Setting Standards in 9-1-1 Policy

Police Technical Services Director Charles Cullen was recently elected to the Board of the National Emergency Number Association (NENA) as the Western Regional Director.

NENA is dedicated to improving 9-1-1 through research, development, training, education, outreach, and advocacy in North America. NENA, which represents more than 12,000 members, recommends best practices and technology standards for 9-1-1 operations.

Cullen was elected as the Western Regional Director, which encompasses Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, Utah, Washington, Wyoming, and the U.S. territories in the Pacific Region. He will also advise on 9-1-1 standards in other countries around the globe.

“We are incredibly proud of Charlie for being recognized for his expertise in emergency communications on a national level. Charlie will be helping to develop future policy for 9-1-1 and recommend the latest technology. We’re fortunate to have him in a leadership role here in Palo Alto,” said Police Chief Robert Jonsen.

Cullen joined the Palo Alto Police Department in 1997 as a public safety dispatcher before promoting to lead dispatcher and later Communications Manager. He became the Technical Services Director in 2008. Cullen has command responsibility for the Records Division, Communications Division, Court Liaison Officer, Code Enforcement, Crime Analysis, Radio Shop, and all technology used by the Department.
