Pet Safety / Public Safety Notice from Animal Services Regarding Rabid Bat Discovered at Hoover Park

This is from our partners at Palo Alto Animal Services, and we are sending it on their behalf:

On Friday, June 29, 2018, a bat was found in the Hoover Park dog run (2901 Cowper Street) which later tested positive for the rabies virus. We are not aware of any direct contact that this particular bat had with any humans or canines.

It is extremely important to never touch a bat, or let kids or animals near a downed bat. Hot weather can sometimes cause bats to fall from trees. Be alert of your surroundings, and those of your pets. If you see a bat that appears to be sick, please call Palo Alto Animal Services immediately at 650-329-2413 so an Animal Control Officer can respond. If possible and if safe to do so, place a box or other object over the bat to prevent future exposure.

If you or your pet come into contact with a bat, or if you have further questions, please contact the Santa Clara County Public Health Department at 408-885-4214 or Palo Alto Animal Services at 650-496-5971.
