Fireworks Ordinance Reminder

The full text of Redford Township's fireworks ordinance is below:

Sec. 58-242. - Fireworks.
(a) No person shall ignite, discharge, or use consumer fireworks, as defined by the Michigan Fireworks Safety Act (MCL 28.451 et seq.), except on the day preceding, the day of, or the day after a national holiday.

(b) No person shall ignite, discharge, or use consumer fireworks between the hours of 1:00 a.m. and 8:00 a.m. on New Year's Day or between the hours of 12 midnight and 8:00 a.m. of the day preceding, the day of, or the day after a national holiday.

(c) No person shall ignite, discharge or use consumer fireworks on public property, school property, church property or the property of another person without that organization's or person's express permission to use consumer fireworks on those premises.

(d) No person shall sell consumer fireworks to anyone younger than 18 years of age.

(e) No one shall ignite, discharge, or use consumer fireworks while under the influence of liquor, a controlled substance, or a combination of liquor and a controlled substance, as defined in the Michigan Vehicle Code (1949 PA 300, MCL 257.1d and 257.86).

(f) Any person who violates any provisions of sections (a) through (e) above, shall be guilty of a municipal civil infraction punishable by a civil fine of not more than $500.00 for each violation.

(g) The township board of trustees may grant a permit for the use of agricultural or wildlife fireworks, articles pyrotechnic, display fireworks, or special effects manufactured for outdoor pest control or agricultural purposes, or for public or private display within the township by municipalities, fair associations, amusement parks, or other organizations or individuals approved by the township board of trustees provided that:

(1) The applicant prepares a written application form provided by the State of Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs.
(2) Pays a fee to be set from time to time by the Township Board of Trustees; and
(3) Complies with the provisions of the Michigan Fireworks Safety Act (MCL 28.451 et seq.).

(h) No person shall discharge or launch a "sky lantern" or similar type of unmanned fire. "Sky lantern" means a small unmanned hot air balloon with an opening at the bottom where a fire is suspended. "Sky lanterns" are sometimes called "Chinese lanterns," "sky candles" or "fire balloons" and usually consist of a wire frame with a paper shell and a candle or other fuel by which the burning candle or fuel creates hot air that makes the lantern float and glow.
