Long duration heat wave through July 4th holiday, cooling center information

A long duration heat wave will affect the area through the July 4th holiday and may continue into late next week. High temperatures will be in the 90s with heat indices near or over 100 degrees. The worst of the heat wave is currently expected on Sunday and Monday (and possibly into Tuesday).

The Office of Emergency Management advises residents that the North Brunswick Library (880 Hermann Road) and the North Brunswick Senior Center (15 Linwood Place) have been designated as cooling centers. The following are hours for the Library:

Friday and Saturday: 10 a.m. – 5 p.m.
Sunday: Noon – 5 p.m.
Monday – Thursday: 10 a.m. – 9 p.m.

The Senior Center will be open weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Please note that the Library and Senior Center will be closed on Wednesday, July 4th due to the observance of Independence Day.

Please take it easy if working outdoors, drink plenty of water and seek shade when possible. Wear light weight clothing. Never leave people or pets in a closed car. Also, check on family members and neighbors.

Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Anyone overcome by the heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location. Heat stroke is an emergency...call 9-1-1.

The extended period of heat will also create poor air quality conditions across the region and brings a low potential for power blackouts due to excessive stress on the power grid.

Additional heat safety tips may be found on the Township website’s Office of Emergency Management page at www.northbrunswicknj.gov/departments/emergency-mgt.
