Vallejo Man Leads Police in Pursuit; Handgun Recovered

On 06/26/18 at approximately 2:00am Fairfield Police Officer Rick Mroz was on his way to Solano County Jail with a driver he arrested for DUI when he observed a vehicle traveling westbound on Texas Street at approximately 70MPH.  The vehicle was bottoming out on the road causing sparks to fly as he sped down Texas Street.  Officer Mroz radioed to any available units in the area to watch for the speeding vehicle.  Officer Bender picked up the suspect vehicle on Texas Street approaching the I-80 on-ramp.

As Officer Bender caught up to the suspect on westbound I-80 he initiated an enforcement stop, however the vehicle accelerated at a high rate of speed attempting to evade him.  The suspect took the Suisun Valley Road exit, traveled up over the freeway eventually making his way to Cordelia Road.  Additional Officer’s joined the pursuit along with a CHP Helicopter.  The suspect came to the dead end of W. Cordelia Road crashing through a fence into a field where his vehicle became inoperable.

The suspect, later identified as 26 year old Vallejo resident Dominic Colbert, fled on foot making his way across all lanes of I-80.  A large perimeter was established with the assistance of CHP and Solano County Sheriff’s deputies.  A female passenger was detained from the vehicle and later released.  While the search for Colbert was underway officer’s searching the suspect vehicle located a Smith and Wesson .40cal semi-automatic handgun in the unlocked glove box.

Suspect Colbert was located hiding approximately ½ mile away in the center median between westbound I-80 and the on ramp to Hwy 12 (Jameson Canyon Road.)  Colbert was taken into custody without incident.

Thanks to the quick efforts of the Law Enforcement agencies involved we were able to apprehend this convicted felon and take 1 more illegally possessed gun off our streets.  No citizens or Officers were injured during the incident.

Suspect Dominic Colbert was booked into Solano County jail and charged with Evading Police, Convicted Felon in Possession of a Firearm, Concealed Firearm in a Vehicle, and Resisting Arrest.

A photo of the suspect was not available at the time of this alert.
