SCV Sheriff's Deputies Capture Armed Robber on Same Day Crime Committed

A 27-year-old Santa Clarita man, Matthew Girard, was arrested Saturday night for allegedly committing an armed robbery earlier on the same day. On Saturday morning, June 23, 2018, around 3 a.m., it was reported that a male adult, 25-30 years of age, entered a gas station on the 28500 block of Sand Canyon Road in Canyon Country, and allegedly pointed a black semi-automatic handgun at the store employee behind the counter, demanding money. The clerk complied with his orders and gave him the contents of the cash register. The suspect exited the business, and was seen getting into a gold-colored 4-door sedan, driving eastbound on Soledad Canyon Road, and out of view.

A Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff's Station detective assigned to the case, distributed the suspect and suspect's vehicle image(s) obtained from the store's video surveillance system to patrol deputies. She joked to deputies 'don't come back to the station unless the suspect is in custody.' One deputy took her words to heart. At approximately 11:30 p.m. Saturday night, Deputy Murray, who was nearing the end of his shift, spotted a male adult and vehicle that matched the wanted suspect at a business located in close proximity to the original robbery location. In fact, the male adult was even still wearing the same clothes. It was a match. Murray, along with the assistance of fellow patrol deputies, took the robbery suspect, Matthew Girard of Santa Clarita, into custody. Girard was arrested and transported to the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff's Station jail where he was booked on felony robbery charges.
