Scuba diving incident in Salt Point State Park.
On Saturday, June 16, 2018 at 1427 hours, Timber Cove Fire, California State Parks (Ranger & Lifeguards), Sheriff's patrol and Rescue helicopter, US Coast Guard air and boats, Cal-Fire units were dispatched to a scuba diving incident located at Salt Point State park, Gerstle Cove South.
Units arrived on scene at approximately 1439 hours and a determined that a 51 year old male from (Fremont/South Bay) was scuba diving with a friend approximately 200 feet from shore. The diver experience an unwitnessed event in the water. When his diving buddy swam to assist, he found the diver partially submerged, face under water, and was unconscious and unresponsive. The buddy attempted to rescue the diver, but the unresponsive diver sank out of sight in approximately 30 to 50 feet of water.
At approximately 1532 hours, a diver located the submerged diver and was assisted by California State Parks Lifeguard/Rescue Swimmers who dove and recovered the submerged diver and brought him to the surface. Sonoma County Sheriff's Helicopter Henry-1 assisted and air lifted the diver from the open water to shore where death was pronounced at 1538 hours.
