Police Save Woman from Vicious Attack by Her Own Dog

On the morning of June 14, 2018, around 8:45 am Fairfield Police Dispatch received a call from a concerned citizen. The citizen reported hearing a woman screaming for help from the backyard next door to them in 1600 blk of Kentucky St. The caller believed the woman was the neighbor and when they looked over their own fence could see a woman on the ground and appeared to be under attack from a large dog.

Officers were immediately dispatched to the location as updates were provided by the neighbor as to the serious nature of the dog attack. Once officers were on scene, they were taken by the citizen to the fence close to the attack. The house in question has an unusually large yard, almost a full acre in size, and the attack was occurring in the farthest reach of the yard away from the home and street. Offices could see an adult woman lying face down and bleeding profusely from both arms with a large dog standing over her.

The dog quickly alerted to the officer's presence and charged the fence where the officers stood. One officer on scene fired his handgun at the charging dog out of fear of his safety, his fellow officers and the woman that had already been badly injured. The dog stopped his attack and soon succumbed to his injuries. Emergency aid was immediately provided to the woman, and the severity of her injuries were determined to be life-threatening. The woman was taken by ambulance to a local trauma center and later flown by helicopter to a surgical center in the bay area and is listed in serious condition. The woman was identified as a resident of the location age 29 years, and the dog appeared to be her own animal.

As the investigation into the dog attack was able to determine the dog had attacked the woman when she opened a kennel holding the dog in an effort to provide water. A large kennel structure was located in the far reaches of the woman’s yard and appeared to house several dogs of a similar breed. Humane Animal Services is the lead agency in the investigation going forward.
