2018 HURRICANE SEASON - BE READY!

2018 HURRICANE SEASON - BE READY!

We want to take this opportunity to remind our residents that Hurricane season is upon us. If you haven’t already done so, this is a good time to evaluate your personal hurricane plan and begin preparations in anticipation of any storms that may affect our area.

Here are some important things to keep in mind:

• Review your home hurricane and flood insurance plans to make sure they are up to date.
• Don’t wait until the last minute to begin trimming your trees and clearing vegetation from your yard. Do it now!
• The same applies for the disposal of household bulk trash items. Please dispose of these items before the threat of a storm, or you risk not having bulk trash picked up in time.
• After an emergency, you may need to survive on your own for several days. Being prepared means having your own food, water and other supplies to last for at least 72 hours. Now is a good time to stock up on non-perishable foods, water, batteries, first aid kit, prescription medications, cash, household chlorine bleach and medicine dropper to disinfect water, fire extinguisher, lighter/matches and paper products.
• If you own a generator, now is a good time to make sure it is working properly. If you haven’t already done so, you should consider draining old gasoline, and changing the oil, fuel and air filters from last season.
• Boat owners should have a plan in place on how they will secure or relocate their vessel.
• Keep in mind that the City of Lighthouse Point is in a mandatory hurricane evacuation area for Category 3, 4 and 5 hurricanes. Depending on the severity of the storm, residents may be ordered to evacuate. The police department will provide residents with evacuation and re-entry instructions when applicable. You can find important information on evacuation procedures by visiting https://www.ready.gov/evacuating-yourself-and-your-family.
• The sheltering of animals should also be considered if evacuation orders are issued in Lighthouse Point. Please keep in mind that there are a limited number of public shelters that allow animals. You should have a plan in place to shelter your animals in a location outside mandatory evacuation areas.
• Encourage your Lighthouse Point family, friends and neighbors to sign up for our NIXLE emergency notification system. Through NIXLE, we will be providing important hurricane updates before, during and after storms that directly affects Lighthouse Point residents. For instructions on how to sign up using your email service, visit our website at www.lhppd.com, or text your zip code to 888777 from your mobile phone.
