Controled Burn

MCFD will conduct a controlled burn on Tuesday and Wednesday, June 12 & 13, on hillsides near Highway 101 and the St. Vincent School for Boys (near Marinwood). The scheduled ignition time is 9 a.m. and the team expects to finish by 3 p.m. each day. You can expect to see and/or smell smoke during the burn.

The purpose of the burn is two-fold: 1) to train 89 new Marin County Fire Department seasonal-hire firefighters; 2) to reduce fuel loading in the area in preparation of wildfire season.

We promote controlled burns to help reduce calls to our emergency dispatchers about the sight or smell of smoke. If you have neighbors who are not on social media, please give them a phone call or knock on their door so they aren't surprised by our scheduled burn.

This also serves as a good reminder about the importance of defensible space around your homes. As you think about seasonal shrub and tree trimming, remember that you can improve your chances of your home's survival in a wildfire. Learn more at www.firesafemarin.org/defensible-space. And finally, be sure to sign-up for emergency notifications via AlertMarin.org and Nixle (text your zip code to 888777).
