Update - Media Release: High School Student with Handgun Arrest

Subject: High School Student with Handgun Arrest


This morning the principal at Sun Prairie High School reported to the schools on-site police school liaison officer that a 17-year old male student had brought a handgun to school. The principal became aware of this from another staff member.

Sun Prairie’s Police School Liaison Officer Jack Wilkinson attempted to make contact with the student who fled from Officer Wilkinson. Officer Wilkinson engaged in a foot pursuit of the student who fled from the school and ran into the neighborhoods east of the high school. Responding Sun Prairie police officers were able to get the student into custody and recovered the handgun.

The investigation at this time reveals that there were no threats made by the student to any staff or other students. Charges are pending at this time as this continues to be an active investigation. More information as it relates to the identity of the student and specific criminal charges will be released once it is ready to be released.

The 17-old student who was arrested is identified as Kiante K. Jackson, from Madison, WI. Jackson is being charged with felony Possession of Firearm on School Grounds, misdemeanor Disorderly Conduct while Armed, misdemeanor Possession of Dangerous Weapon Under the Age of 18 and misdemeanor Carrying a Concealed Weapon.

The Sun Prairie Police Department wants to emphasize that although the investigation revealed that Jackson made no direct threats to students or staff, it is unequivocally dangerous, unacceptable and intolerable to ever bring a dangerous weapon onto school grounds and those who choose to do so will be aggressively investigated by the Sun Prairie Police Department to the fullest extent of the law and all applicable criminal charges will be considered.
