Advisory

Areal Flood Advisory from 6/2/2018 11:16 AM to 11:00 PM EDT for McDowell County.

The National Weather Service in Greenville-Spartanburg has extended
the

* Flood Advisory for...
Northeastern Catawba County in the Piedmont of North Carolina...
East central McDowell County in western North Carolina...
Southwestern Alexander County in the Piedmont of North Carolina...
West central Iredell County in the Piedmont of North Carolina...
Southeastern Caldwell County in western North Carolina...
Central Burke County in western North Carolina...

* Until 1100 PM EDT Saturday.

* At 1052 AM EDT, Rainfall accumulations of 4-8 inches earlier this
week over the headwaters of the Catawba River, Johns River, and
associated tributaries has caused high flows and lake pool
elevations along the upper Catawba River. Pool elevations at Lake
James, Lake Rhodhiss, and Lookout Shoals Lake are declining and
conditions are improving, but these lakes remain above the full
pool of 100.0 feet, causing shoreline flooding and flooding of
lake access areas, campgrounds, docks, residential yards, and
swimming areas. Caution is advised anywhere near such areas.
However, conditions will improve further heading into Sunday.

* Residents are encouraged to heed guidance from local officials
and Emergency Management on any potential impacts to property.
Drivers are encouraged to heed any barricades and avoid all
flooded areas.

* The latest pool elevations for the upper Catawba River lakes are
as follows (Full Pool is 100.0 feet):
Lake James: 101.54 feet and falling steadily.
Lake Rhodhiss: 101.07 feet and falling steadily.
Lake Hickory: 99.37 feet and falling steadily.
Lookout Shoals Lake: 101.60 feet and falling steadily.

* Impacts: Per McDowell County Emergency Management, Lake James
Landing and Campground are still experiencing flooding.
Campers and other lake users are urged to obey all barricades
and instructions from local officials.

* Forecast: Additional showers and thunderstorms are possible in the
North Carolina mountains and Foothills today, but coverage will
be isolated. While localized flooding remains possible,
basin-average amounts should be low enough to prevent pools from
rising once again. By Sunday, conditions on area lakes should
be significantly improved and an Advisory should no longer be
needed.

* For more information on lake levels or dam releases, people are
encouraged to visit http://lakes.duke-energy.com or call 1-800-829-
5253.

* Residents along Lookout Shoals Lake should contact Catawba County
Emergency Management to update their contact information using the
following direct link to their Community Alert System web page at:

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

Boaters, fishermen, kayakers, swimmers, and other lake users are
encouraged to exercise caution during elevated lake levels and
downstream releases. Shoreline underwater topography may be

be additional debris in the lake due to upstream floodwaters.
Avoid areas along the stream below dams releasing water.

Only when it is safe to do so, please report flood water flowing
over roads or flooding shorelines, access points, docks, or other
lake property, to the National Weather Service by calling toll free,
1, 800, 2 6 7, 8 1 0 1, or by posting on our Facebook page, or Tweet
it using hashtag nwsgsp. your message should describe the event and
the specific location where it occurred.
