San Leandro Police arrest two suspects after robbery and carjacking
Early Monday morning on May 28th, an employee from Nations Hamburgers in the Washington Plaza was carjacked while walking to his vehicle. The incident occurred at 4 am when the employee finished his shift and was walking to his parked vehicle at the rear of the Plaza, close to Hays Street.
As the victim was walking, another vehicle pulled up and a male subject exited with his face covered with a hooded jacket. The suspect produced a handgun and demanded the victim's money and vehicle keys. Afterward, the victim was ordered to lay on the ground while the suspect fled in the victim's vehicle.
The victim watched as both his vehicle and the suspect vehicle drove away. Officers arrived on scene and immediately began canvassing the area. An officer on patrol located both the suspect vehicle and the stolen vehicle parked in the lot of the Davis Street Market with the occupants standing outside. As the officer turned around, the suspects fled the lot in the suspect vehicle, leaving the stolen vehicle behind.
The officer quickly gave chase as the suspect drove into a dead-end street. Additional units arrived and both suspects were taken into custody without incident. An "air-soft" replica firearm was located hidden under the seat of the suspect's vehicle. Both suspects; 21 yr-old Jarell Hubbard of San Leandro and 24 yr-old Oanh Hoang of Hayward confessed to their involvement in this crime.
"The suspects were quickly located and apprehended due to the rapid response of our patrol units who immediately began searching the surrounding areas," said Lt. Isaac Benabou. "The victim escaped potential injury by complying with the suspect at the time of the crime."
Today, the Alameda County District Attorney charged the suspects with robbery and carjacking, both being felony offenses.
